About the Role
Citizens Advice in West Sussex (CAWS) is seeking an experienced and empathetic Welfare Benefits and Debt Adviser to support injured veterans and their families as part of an Armed Forces Covenant Fund Family Focused Project, delivered in partnership with the GP Federation.
Working remotely, you will provide specialist welfare benefits and debt advice to people affected by physical injury, disability, mental ill health, and service-related trauma. Taking a holistic and trauma-informed approach, you will help clients understand their rights, maximise income, address debt issues, and improve their financial wellbeing.
Key Responsibilities
- Support the delivery of the Armed Forces Covenant Fund project alongside the GP Federation Project Lead.
- Provide specialist welfare benefits advice, including Universal Credit, disability benefits, legacy benefits, and veteran-specific support.
- Conduct benefit entitlement checks and income maximisation assessments.
- Deliver debt advice, including budgeting, prioritising debts, and identifying appropriate debt solutions.
- Support veterans and family members affected by injury, disability, and mental health challenges.
- Work collaboratively with healthcare professionals, Armed Forces charities, and referral partners.
About You
You will have:
- Experience providing welfare benefits and debt advice.
- Strong knowledge of disability benefits, Universal Credit, and debt solutions.
- Experience supporting vulnerable clients with complex needs.
- Excellent communication, casework, and organisational skills.
- The ability to work independently and manage a varied caseload remotely.
- A commitment to delivering high-quality, person-centred advice.
Experience working with veterans, military families, or within a trauma-informed environment is desirable.
A DBS will be required for the role

Fixed Term contract - 12 months
Hours:
15 hours per week
Location:
Remote (supporting clients across Kent, Sussex and Surrey) This is a fully remote role, with flexibility around working days and hours, subject to service needs. Occasional travel for training or team meetings may be required (across Kent, Sussex and Surrey).
Salary:
£29 977.00 FTE per annum (Actual £11990.80 pro rata)
