My Summer Internship Experience

Molly’s Summer Internship Experience
My name is Molly, and I am currently studying Marketing and Management with Psychology at the University of Sussex. This summer, I had the incredible opportunity to complete a six-week Projects and Marketing Internship at Citizens Advice West Sussex (CAWS). Looking back on my experience, I can honestly say it has been one of the most valuable and rewarding experiences of my university journey so far.
From my first day, I was welcomed into a supportive and friendly team who encouraged me to learn, take initiative and develop new skills. Throughout the six weeks, I gained hands-on experience in many different areas of marketing, communications and community engagement, giving me a real insight into working within the charity sector.
What I learned
During my internship, I had the opportunity to:
- Learn how to use a variety of websites, systems, and digital platforms used in marketing and communications.
- Create social media content, including Instagram posts and TikTok videos.
- Build my confidence by creating video content and becoming more comfortable in front of the camera.
- Create and redesign communication materials, developing my graphic design skills and learning how to work within brand guidelines.
- Contribute to a marketing strategy, helping me strengthen my planning and organisation skills.
- Produce social media reports, which developed my analytical and evaluation skills by identifying what worked well and where improvements could be made.
Community Events and Experiences
One of the most enjoyable parts of the internship was attending a variety of community events and seeing first hand the impact of the work CAWS does.
Some of the events I attended included:
- Language Cafes every Thursday, where I connected with people from different cultures and backgrounds.
- Carers Supports “Getting Ready for Winter in the Summer” event, which brought together organisations supporting local communities.
- The Crawley Legal Walk, where we walked 10km to help raise money for CAWS to continue giving out free, impartial advice.
Growing My Confidence
A highlight of my internship was the level of trust and autonomy I was given. I was encouraged to create content, design posters, and contribute ideas independently. Having the freedom to decide what might work well and bring my own creativity into projects helped me grow both professionally and personally.
Thank you
Most importantly, I am incredibly grateful for the people I met during my time at CAWS. I would like to thank the Communications Team for their support, guidance, and encouragement throughout the six weeks.
Overall, I have gained practical skills, increased my confidence, met inspiring people, and learned so much about the charity sector. I am incredibly thankful for this opportunity and would recommend to other university students. I will carry everything I have learned into my future studies and career.
Thank you, CAWS, for an amazing six weeks!
