Top Ten Tips to stay cool in the heat

Heatwaves can make everyday life uncomfortable and even risky for your health. Staying cool and hydrated is key, and a few simple changes can make a big difference. Here are ten easy tips to help you beat the heat:

  1. Close curtains and blinds during the day and open them at night
  2. Drink extra fluids, especially water
  3. Avoid alcohol, caffeine and hot drinks
  4. Have a cool shower
  5. Turn off non-essential electronics
  6. Wear sun cream, a hat and sunglasses
  7. Dress for the weather
  8. Try to avoid direct sunlight between 11am-3pm
  9. Limit strenuous physical activity
  10. Stay out of the sun and find shade

Heat exhaustion and heatstroke

Heat exhaustion occurs when the body overheats and cannot cool down. Common symptoms include:

  • Tiredness
  • Headache
  • Weakness
  • Feeling faint
  • Feeling or being sick
  • Heavy sweating
  • Muscle cramps
  • Intense thirst

Heatstroke is where the body is no longer able to cool down. Common symptoms include:

  • shortness of breath or fast breathing
  • seizures

  • fast heartbeat
  • lack or co ordination
  • hot skin that’s not sweating

  • people who experience alcohol or drug dependence
  • people with serious mental health problems
